We are all full of creativity, sometimes we just need a little help harnessing our power. If you are on the brink of brilliance, but need a little nudge over the edge, perhaps some of the following activities will help set your juice loose.

SAY WHAT?

I’m an aphorism hoarder, and the list below is merely a sampling of my favorite quotes. I thought it might be fun to include a little matching exercise. Read the quote and see if you can correctly match its originator. Fun activities are a great way to keep thinking about creativity without trying to compel yourself to produce something creative. So, please, sit back, read, and let the mind wander to other lands for a minute. The answers are just under your nose. No, not there . . . inside the book, to the right, at the bottom.

“. . . you don’t reach Serendib by plotting a course for it. You have to set out in good faith for elsewhere and lose your bearings . . . serendipitously.”

“This discovery, indeed, is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word, which, as I have nothing better to tell you, I shall endeavor to explain to you: you will understand it better by the derivation than by the definition. I once read a silly fairy tale, called The Three Princes of Serendip; as their Highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.”

“To invent you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.”

“You cannot use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

“If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.”

“The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.”

“You need chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star.”

“The hand is the visible part of the brain.”

“Do not worry about your originality. You could not get rid of it even if you wanted to.”

“Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it. Ditto.”

“Generally speaking, color directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul.”

“Art is created through intuition.”

“The route of my pencil on the sheet of paper is, in some respects, analogous to the gesture of a man groping in darkness . . . I am led, I do not lead.”

“All truly profound art requires its creator to abandon himself to certain powers which he invokes but cannot altogether control.”

“Chaos is inherent in all compounded things. Strive on with diligence.”

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.”

“Beginnings are always messy.”
